Extended Air Ratchets. What Are They? Why Everyone Needs One With Photos

It might be important to first take a second and answer what is an extended air ratchet. Quite simply, they’re the same as a normal air ratchet, however, the shaft is long (15″-22″) long which allows superior access to hard to reach fasteners. They are relatively new on the market, and many mechanics have yet to start using them. However, those that do own them say they work incredibly well and are worth buying.

What’re the benefits of an extended air ratchet?

  • They work great on exhaust bolts (don’t burn yourself on hot exhaust parts)
  • You can reach hard to reach fasteners and break them loose fast
  • Much easier access in tight spots
  • Decent Torque (roughly 45 ft-lbs) breaking power and 10x faster than doing it by hand (at least)

What’re the cons of an extended air ratchet?

  • They’re louder than stubby ratchets (wear ear protection)
  • They’re slightly more expensive than just a regular air ratchet
  • You will fatigue faster if using one all day, because of their extra weight.

I personally haven’t bought one yet, but have done my research and this post will be all about what I have found.

Let’s start with some photos of an extended air ratchet so we can be on the same page.

The model in the photo is the AirCat 808-15. I have yet to find the AirCat models on Amazon. They are sold on eBay and I set up a search ready for you here, so you can see what extended ratchets are on eBay for sale. The link will take you to an eBay search for “extended 3/8 air ratchet.”

What is the best extended 3/8″ air ratchet to buy?

That depends. The AirCat models are known for being quieter than other brands. However, they can be harder to find and cost more.

Most professional mechanics like these extended ratchets:

Those are basically all that exist on the market in 2018 for air extended ratchets. They are gaining popularity nationwide, and I would assume we will start to see a lot more pop up.

On an automotive technician group, one technician claims to have had a custom Snap On extended 1/4″ cordless ratchet made. Here is the photo of that custom tool. Looks pretty sweet I must say.

What do professional automotive technicians have to say about extended air ratchets? I asked.

“Been using extended air ratchets for years and are hands down one of my most used tools, everyone should have one in their box. Even have a custom made snap-on 1/4” battery powered ratchet with 12” extension.” Kyle

“AirCat makes one now? Sweeeeeet, I bought one from Gardner-Bender years ago and it’s heavy as hell and screams like a banshee.” Matt

“That air ratchet is nice looks like the extended end can get in places that a normal air ratchet can’t get into” John

“…save you many burns or bruises.” Riley

“…it is a real back saver as I can stand up and let the tool do the work that I would normally be bent over doing with a regular ratchet or wrench. So far I have used it for about every job and I have found a place for it in my “go to” the main toolbox.” Leesan

Do I recommend owning an extended air ratchet?

Heck yeah. I think everyone that has access to an air compressor and air tools should have one of these. I would probably grab the 3/8″ drive Aircat one personally. The price is pretty good for a tool that many technicians say they use daily.
